The sustainable development debate of the last three decades has seen a convergence between environmental, economic and social concerns. Today, climate change and associated problems such as efficient use of resources are at the top of the agenda. Cornis van der Lugt will explain how UNEP-DTIE, the UN agency in charge of environmental matters, works with the private sector to encourage and promote best practice and environmental responsibility in all sectors of business and industry. Learn what is next on the international agenda – and how it will affect you.



10:15 – 10:45     What about the Exhibition Industry? Initial Findings

While the exhibition industry’s overall contribution to global warming remains very limited, there is a rising awareness of sustainable issues among the various constituents of the exhibition industry: exhibitors and attendees, show organizers, venue managers, employees of media companies as well as service providers, investors and governments. Michael Duck will identify the challenges facing the industry on its path to greater sustainability and outline how UFI can help its Members respond.

11:00 – 11:45     The Role of a Dedicated Exhibition Centre CSR Manager


By: Niseth van der Meulen, CSR Manager, RAI Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Why did the RAI exhibition centre in Amsterdam decide to hire a full-time Corporate Social Responsibility manager? Niseth van der Meulen will describe her role and duties and explain how she ensures buy-in from her colleagues at RAI on the sustainability processes currently being implemented. She will also provide insight into the kinds of CSR projects initiated at the RAI and their spin-off.
  

and Jan-Marten Krebs, CEO, Climate Services, Sustainable AG, Munich, Germany on Co-operation between Green-Balance and RAI on Calculation and Compensation of CO2 Emissions (including a CO2 calculator)

One of the current RAI projects is the development by Groen Balans of a voluntary, on-line tool that will calculate CO2 compensation for organizers, exhibitors and visitors. Jan-Marten Krebs will describe just what CO2 compensation is – and how it works – and will provide a “live” demonstration of how the on-line tool will work.

11:45 – 12:30     Measuring and Monitoring the CO2 Footprint of an Exhibition

“Planète Durable” is committed to greening all aspects of its own event organization. A forerunner in this field, it has pioneered a full-scale CO2 footprint assessment of its show “Planète Durable” now in its second edition. Christophe Merer will provide insights into the methodology used, the detailed results and the many lines of action currently pursued to further “lighten” this footprint.

13:30 – 14:00     Harnessing the Winds of Change: Energy Reduction, Efficiency and Self-Sufficiency

Starting with the first city-sited wind turbine in 2002, Exhibition Place has set itself a challenging agenda to reach energy self-sufficiency by 2010. Dianne Young will explain the “green” energy options used along with "green" polices to engage show producers, visitors and staff in achieving this goal.


14:00 – 14:30     A Service Provider’s Experience

Atelier Damböck is an SME with a strong commitment to environmentally-friendly processes.
Andreas Damböck will explain how he has integrated sustainability principles into many operational procedures in his company. He will describe the difficulties encountered and will provide his view on the challenges ahead in the areas of waste avoidance, air pollution, water and energy reduction.


14:30 – 15:00     Green Meeting Guidelines: an exemple from Thailand

The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau is currently running a “Green Meetings” campaign designed to encourage operators to focus more on environmental issues and reduce their costs in the process. Pojai Pookakupt will outline TCEB’s approach to sustainable development and provide specific examples of achievements in the Thai exhibition industry.

  
  Part 3: How does UFI contribute?  


15:00 – 15:15     A New UFI Online Resource  


By: Christian Druart, Secretary of the UFI Sustainable Development Committee, UFI Headquarters, Paris, France

Many UFI Members - whether venues, organizers or national associations, - can claim impressive achievements implementing Sustainable Development principles in specific area(s) of their activity. Christian Druart will present the newly implemented on-line tool designed to allow sharing of experiences among Members. This tool should facilitate networking and contribute to overall improvement of industry knowledge.
